Walk-a-thon Success!!!

Seems like it was weeks ago that we had our big Walk-a-thon for our school, but it was only last Monday!!! We had such a wonderful time outside running, jumping, bouncing, throwing, hopping, crawling, and rolling!!! What a day! Our classroom did an excellent job with doing our share for raising awareness and money for our school! We raised $284 with 15 students who each donated money. That ended up be 37.5% of our class! Go Preschool Panthers in Room 121!!! Out of all three preschool classrooms, we had the most students overall that raised the money. I think that is great! We did it as a team! Enjoy a couple pictures of the kids being active!!!

Who’s in the Zoo to visit?

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Last week in room 121 we began our month long study on animals we can see at the Lincoln Park Zoo. This is to prep us for our visit to the zoo at the end of this month. We decided to focus our studies on Safari & Jungle Animals. Each class voted on the two animals they want to study the most about. Our AM class chose Snakes and Lions, and our PM Class chose Gorillas and Lions! Lots of learning has taken place over the past week. Ask your child what he/she knows about our animals of study! The children are little sponges right now soaking up all the information! Check back for photos weekly!

Balls and Ramps Oh My!!!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

What great fun we have been having in room 121 over the past two weeks!!! With one more week to go in our Balls and Ramps Unit, we are gearing up to create our own clay balls and designing our own paper and tin foil balls!!! (Don’t forget to add the ramp!)

It has been so much fun learning a new topic of study with the kids! I think I’ve had as much fun as the kids have. Their problem-solving skills, and creativity to create amazing structures and ramps has blown me away!!! Go preschoolers!!!

Make sure to check out our March bulletin board outside the classroom! It shows the amazing work the children have been learning and creating in class throughout our Balls & Ramps Unit! There are also some great pictures displayed on there as well. (I will try to post some pictures on this blog over this upcoming weekend as well!)

Some exciting news to share with all of you this month is the new Donorschoose.org project I have been approved to get!!! It is titled “Exploration Through the Senses”! It is for our classroom to recieve a new sand table and water table, along with safe mats to place under the sensory tables! Our sand table is currently wrapped with duct tape on the base of the sand bin, and our water table is close to being 17 years old (not to mention extremely small and is plugged with a wine cork because the original plug broke!) Sooooo, please spread the word to your friends and family to support our new project on Donorschoose.org!!! Here is the link to check it out! http://www.donorschoose.org/project/exploration-through-the-senses/975242/

Vroom-vroom!

Last week, students dug deeper into learning more about cars! First we created a KWL Chart to determine what they knew about cars, and what they wanted to learn more about cars. Through guiding their interests into the activities from last week, we painted, sculpted, and designed our own cars, began our “driver license” process, watch an actual short video of cars being made in a plant, (it takes 16 hours on average to make one car), and we explored different types of license plates with a crayon rubbing activity! The children really got into our week with learning all about cars! Pictures to follow soon…left the camera cord at school!

This week….TRAINS!!! Choo-Choo!!!

PS…Tuesday, January 22nd I will be sending home the 4th Backpack Project activity!!! Please check your child’s folder!!!

***DUE TO FREEZING TEMPERATURES, WE WILL NOT BE GOING OUTSIDE FOR RECESS ON TUESDAY AND POSSIBLY WEDNESDAY. PLEASE BUNDLE UP YOUR LITTLE ONE THIS WEEK!!! ***

Spanish Lunch Bunch Classes to Start this Week…hopefully!!!

Attention PreK Families,

In the past, we have had the Little Linguistics Academy come into our school to offer Mandarin Chinese, Spanish, and French to the Preschoolers in between the AM/PM sessions. I was informed late last week that due to low enrollment in the Spanish class, there might not be a Spanish class offered this spring for the Preschoolers.

If you are waiting to turn in your enrollment forms on Tuesday, please do not wait! Please call the Little Linguistics Academy by tomorrow to let them know of your interest. We want to  keep these opportunities for our students at our school, but they will only stay if there is interest. My biggest worry is that they will take on another school that is interested. PLEASE let the Little Linguistics Academy know of your interest by emailing them at angel@littlelinguistsacademy.com

Happy New Year!

Welcome back! I hope you had a wonderful winter break with your preschooler! There were a lot of environmental changes that happened over the course of thirteen days. There was snow, sleet, rain, it got a lot COLDER, and now it really is WINTER!!!

Now that it is “officially” winter, I wanted to remind all the preschool families that we do go outside everyday unless it’s raining, sleeting, freezing temperatures, or high winds in the winter time. PLEASE make sure your child comes to school everyday with boots, A CHANGE OF SHOES or SLIPPERS to put on once in the classroom, gloves/mittens, hat, scarf, warm coat, etc… If there is lots of snow on the ground, and you would like for your child to play in the snow while we are outside, you can have them wear their snowpants as well. Oh what fun we will have putting on our winter wear!!! Don’t forget to label their items!!! 40 preschoolers times 8+ items each is a lot of keep track of.

Miss Hopkins and Hoppy are very busy getting things in order for the new year! They have been planning and working on our upcoming transportation unit! Hoppy over winter break has been on MANY different moads of transportation. Two planes, a golf cart, car, bicycle, sled, Miss Hopkins’ luggage, and who knows what else before next Monday! The two of them are finishing up their pre-planned family holiday trip that was booked back in August (before the board changed our winter break!) We will see you on Monday, January 7th! Until then, Miss Santiago and our substitute will be at school greeting the children on Thursday and Friday.

Wishing you all a happy, healthy, and “hoppy” new year!!!

Celebrating December with Lights From Around the World!!!

Image

From December 8th through the 14th, many families at Peirce School celebrated Hanukkah! We have a few families in our classroom that celebrate this winter holiday, and I wanted them to share their traditions with us! Evie’s mom came in last Wednesday and told us the children’s version of Hanukkah! The children learned a traditional song, and learned how to make their bodies turn into dreidel’s! Evie got to show us her menorah that she made for this year, and the menorah they use to light the candles every Friday night for Shabbat. Thank you for sharing your culture and traditions!!! It was really a neat experience for the kids!

Earlier last week, the children also made their own menorah’s using their hand prints and finger prints!!! The children LOVED this art project, and were so excited to share them with you! I hope you are enjoying the art work at home!
